Masisi defies SADC over Mnangagwa

For the first time SEOM has dismissed Zimbabwean Elections labeling them a sham and further said they were not free and fair. A comprehensive preliminary report from SEOM Chair Dr. Nevers Mumba says the elections fell short of the dictates of both the constitution of Zimbabwe and the SADC guidelines and principles governing democratic elections.

Various stakeholders including Botswana political parties like Botswana Congress Party (BCP) suggested a cessation to the swearing in of the declared President elect Mnangagwa.

“This is a serious indictment on the election outcome and if Mnangagwa has an ounce of respect for the people of Zimbabwe and SADC as an organization, he must not continue with the swearing in until this very grave matter is been dealt with to its fullest. We call on all stakeholders to boycott the inauguration should Mnangagwa decide to proceed,” BCP Publicity Secretary, Dr Mpho Pheko said in the statement.

However, despite by the calls by SEOM and European Union Election Observer Mission (EU EOM) describing elections as a sham, President Masisi differs with them.

In a statement released this week, Masisi said, “It gives me great pleasure to extend to you, on behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Botswana, our sincere congratulation on your electoral victory,”

He continued to add that Mnangagwa’s resounding victory is a clear demonstration of the trust and confidence that the people of Zimbabwe have in his visionary leadership.

Masisi further commended Mnangagwa and his government and the people of Zimbabwe for adhering to message of peace during the elections which is a clear reflection of Zimbabwe’s commitment to the democratic ideals that are a distinguishing factor of the SADC Region.

“Your Excellency, as you once again take the responsibilities of your high office, I wish you and the people of Zimbabwe of our commitment to work closely with you and your government in further deepening the bonds of friendship that exist between our two countries and peoples,”
